I have argued repeatedly that Victoria’s $200 billion Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project will consume most of the state’s infrastructure budget, starving existing transport corridors and growth areas of funding for decades.
These growth areas are severely lacking in infrastructure following years of immigration-driven population growth. They face further starvation as funding is diverted to the SRL.
The Herald-Sun reports that the Allan Labor government will allocate $15.1 billion to SRL East between 2025–26 and 2029–30, meaning about 18% of all state capital spending on roads, rail, schools and hospitals each year will go to this single project.
