The ‘Yes in My Backyard’ (YIMBY) movement has long advocated that the solution to Australia’s crisis is to upzone our cities to allow high-rise apartments in more places.
YIMBYs frequently point to the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP), introduced in 2016, which permitted the upzoning of around three-quarters of Auckland’s residential land area.
The Grattan Institute claims that this single planning modification reduced Auckland rentals by 28% compared to no upzoning.
